Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment for people who want to rejuvenate their skin. This skincare method can smooth the texture and tone of your skin, improving wrinkles, sun damage, and scarring.

As the name implies, microdermabrasion uses an abrasive tool to smooth away the microderm. This is the outer layer of your skin. Not only does this remove dead skin cells, but it also helps increase your collagen production.

Who Uses Microderm Treatments?

This type of procedure can be used on a huge variety of people. It’s considered safe for nearly all skin colors and types. No matter your age or background, you can benefit from this option.

You might consider this type of treatment if you’re concerned about issues like:

Age spots and other hyperpigmented spots
Wrinkles
Fine lines
Clogged or enlarged pores
Acne scarring
Uneven skin texture
Stretch marks
Sun damage

It can also brighten your overall complexion, even if you don’t have these specific concerns.

Basically, if you’re at all worried about wrinkles and discoloration, microdermabrasion might be an option for you.

How It Works

Microdermabrasion is done when you come into the spa for a skin treatment. Most sessions will take somewhere around an hour. At Sol Aesthetics, we take care to make sure that you’re as comfortable as possible. The entire experience is designed to be soothing and refreshing.

There’s no need for any numbness or anesthesia. You’ll simply relax in a reclined chair while we take care of the work. A specialized tool will rub the top layer of skin off of your face, removing dead cells and refreshing your complexion.

Once the outer area of your skin has been removed, we’ll use a moisturizer and sunscreen to protect the new areas.

This treatment has been FDA approved since 1996. Traditionally, it’s done using a diamond handpiece. But a more recent technique is to use crystals instead.

Diamond Tip Tool

The most common way to perform the treatment is by using a diamond-tipped tool. The surface of the tip is just abrasive enough to exfoliate your skin. Then it sucks the dead skin cells away, keeping them from lingering. The skin underneath is bright and fresh.

Diamond-tipped tools are also ideal for use in sensitive areas, like around your eyes and nose. They allow for precise application.

In the past, there was a technique called dermabrasion that penetrated more deeply below the skin. However, it was discovered that this actually caused damage. Microdermabrasion doesn’t cause the same damage because it only affects the very top layer of your skin.

The tool can penetrate deeper if you need a lot of exfoliation. But no matter what, the entire treatment is gentle and controlled.

Crystal Technique

A newer technique uses a tool that emits crystals. The tool sprays crystals that then gently rub your topmost layer of skin away. Similarly to the diamond tip tool, there is suction power to remove the dead cells immediately.

It’s common to use sodium bicarbonate or aluminum oxide for this procedure. Neither of these crystals is dangerous to the skin, but both are abrasive enough to exfoliate.

Another new technique is hydradermabrasion. This uses the exfoliation techniques you’re familiar with. At the same time, though, the skin is infused with certain products. These help increase your collagen production, which decreases wrinkles. They also improve blood flow, so your complexion is rosier and brighter.

Are There Side Effects?

Microdermabrasion is a relaxed treatment that we can do right here in our spa. Like with any skincare treatment, you might experience some side effects. But there’s very little risk of any serious issues.

Most commonly, your skin might be a little tender, red, and swollen after the treatment. But these effects usually subside within just a few hours.

It’s a good idea to moisturize afterward to make sure your skin doesn’t dry out or flake. There’s occasionally very mild bruising because of the suction. However, that should subside soon as well.

You don’t need any recovery time from this. You can go right back to your daily life. Just make sure that your skincare products are gentle, and that you protect the skin. Sunscreen is vital. You might be more sun sensitive for a few weeks afterward.
